兔子先生 () proudly announces that its Civil Engineering Technology students won four prestigious awards, including two national-level recognitions, at the 2025 American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) Carolinas Student Symposium, hosted by Clemson University April 10-12. HGTC was the only two-year college competing against ten four-year universities from across the Carolinas鈥攁nd emerged as a powerful contender.

This year marked HGTC鈥檚 largest delegation ever, with 26 students and two (2) faculty advisors, allowing for participation in a record number of events and the most awards earned in a single year.

Highlights include:

  • 3rd Place 鈥 Timber-Strong Design Build (TSDB) Competition
Team Captains: Devin Galvin & Lana Bryant
Build Team: Devin Galvin, Adnan 鈥淒ean鈥 Stewart, Copper Hardwick, Ozbeidy 鈥淥zzie鈥 Trujillo, Thiago Lopez, Carl Christopher
The team also earned the coveted 鈥淏est in Show鈥 designation and is now among just 20 teams nationally invited to compete for a place at the 2025 ASCE Civil Engineering Student Championships in San Luis Obispo, California.
  • 2nd Place 鈥 UESI Surveying Competition
Team Captains: Justin Harrellson, Gretchen Lindow
Field Team: Justin Harrellson, Gretchen Lindow, Kiersten Pridgeon, Gavin Hansen, Brian Pohl, Ozbeidy 鈥淥zzie鈥 Trujillo
  • 2nd Place 鈥 T-Shirt Design Competition
    Designer: Adnan 鈥淒ean鈥 Stewart
  • 1st Place 鈥 Leadership and Engagement Award
This top honor was awarded to the entire HGTC team, recognizing their exceptional professionalism, teamwork, and enthusiasm.

In addition to these victories, HGTC students also competed in the Steel Bridge, Concrete Bat, Quiz Bowl, Freshmore, Design Challenge, and Geotechnical Engineering events, showcasing the College鈥檚 expanding presence and capabilities in civil engineering education.

鈥淭his remarkable performance is a testament to the grit, talent, and technical skill of our students and faculty,鈥 said Dr. Marilyn 鈥淢urph鈥 Fore, HGTC President. 鈥淭heir achievements on a stage dominated by four-year universities speak volumes about the quality of education and training offered at HGTC. We couldn鈥檛 be prouder.鈥

Professors David Lewis and Babatunde Alo, faculty advisors for HGTC鈥檚 ASCE Student Chapter, expressed their enthusiasm for the students鈥 growth and success.

鈥淥ur students competed head-to-head with some of the most established civil engineering programs in the region鈥攁nd won,鈥 said David Lewis. 鈥淲e are especially proud of the Timber-Strong team鈥檚 鈥楤est in Show鈥 honor, which puts us on the radar for national recognition.鈥

A highlight of the event is the invitation to the Timber-Strong Design Build鈩 Showcase in California this June. Only 20 teams nationally receive this honor, and HGTC may become one of just seven two-year colleges in the nation to ever attend. The team is currently preparing a 200-word submission to describe what makes their design unique.

As HGTC continues to break barriers and raise the bar for technical education, these achievements shine a light on the impact of dedicated faculty, motivated students, and HGTC鈥檚 commitment to hands-on learning and workforce readiness.
