Duke Energy Foundation Awards $40,000 to HGTC Foundation in Support of Electrical Lineworker Program

Duke Energy Grant 2025Duke Energy presents a $40,000 grant to HGTC Foundation in honor of National Lineworker Appreciation Day to benefit the College鈥檚 Electrical Lineworker Technician Program.

In celebration of National Lineworker Appreciation Day, Horry-Georgetown Technical College () is proud to announce a $40,000 grant from the Duke Energy Foundation to support the College鈥檚 Electrical Lineworker Technician program. This generous contribution represents an increase from previous years and reaffirms Duke Energy鈥檚 continued investment in workforce development and technical education across South Carolina.

The funding will be used to provide incoming students with critical tools and safety equipment needed to begin training in the high-demand field of electrical linework. Based on the Conway Campus, HGTC鈥檚 lineworker program prepares students for immediate entry into the utility industry with hands-on training in a state-of-the-art lineman yard.

Shannon Detzler, President & CEO of the HGTC Foundation, emphasized the impact of this investment, 鈥淒uke Energy鈥檚 support helps bridge the gap between classroom learning and real-world workforce needs. By funding tools and protective gear, they are removing barriers and opening doors for students pursuing essential careers.鈥

The Electrical Lineworker Technician program, which launched in 2015, boasts a remarkable 98% job placement rate. With six cohorts of 16 students offered annually, the one-semester certificate equips participants with the knowledge, physical training, and technical skills required to enter the utility workforce confidently and competently.

鈥淭he energy landscape is rapidly evolving, and the need for skilled lineworkers has never been greater,鈥 said Mindy Taylor, Director of Government and Community Relations for Duke Energy. 鈥淥ur partnership with HGTC ensures that the next generation of lineworkers is well-prepared to support and grow our energy grid across the state.鈥

The HGTC Foundation plays a pivotal role in advancing the College鈥檚 mission by securing philanthropic support for students, faculty, and campus programs. This latest grant from the Duke Energy Foundation highlights the power of collaboration between industry and education to drive meaningful impact in the region.

While the summer cohort beginning May 19 is already full, a limited number of spots are still available for the fall class starting August 25.
